Aim 
Simultaneous subscription allocation on the SIM card and in the network to improve SIM cards logistics and activate SIM everywhere at the time of first use

Solution
Sicap Dynamic SIM allocation (DSA) solution includes various modules to interrogate with network nodes for allocation of subscription during first use of the SIM card and updates the subscription on the SIM card using SIM OTA:

  • Subscriber obtains a new SIM with temporary IMSI
  • DSA registers subscriber in the network (acts as HLR/HSS) or gets a trigger from existing HLR/HSS
  • Subscriber selects various parameters like region, tariff plan, etc. using Web or SMS/USSD communication with DSA, or selection is made automatically according to configured rules
  • Once selection is made, a new real MSISDN/IMSI is allocated by DSA
  • DSA selects proper billing system, HLR/HSS/AuC and other network nodes and updates information according to selected parameters there
  • DSA uses SIM OTA to update IMSI file on the SIM card and reregister with new IMSI

Solution
SIM OTA integrates with existing MNO network roaming steering platform to detect roaming subscribers and propagate PLMN/PRL files changes:

  • Subscriber device registers in roaming network according to the PLMN list in the file on SIM card
  • When network roaming steering platform detects registration in non-partner network, it sends trigger to SIM OTA with optimized PLMN list
  • SIM OTA updates file on SIM and refreshes – device is registering now in the partner network

Seamless subscriber account monitoring on mobile device screen using JavaCard SIM applet

Solution:
Sicap SIM OTA integrates with the MNO billing or prepaid system to receive balance updates and propagates it to the device through the SIM card applet:

  • When subscriber account balance changes, a trigger with a new value is sent by billing system to SIM OTA
  • SIM OTA sends a specially formatted OTA SMS to the SIM applet on subscriber SIM card
  • SIM applet changes the value on the subscriber device’s screen

  • Better user experience – subscribers are constantly aware of account balance and encouraged to top up more frequently
  • Notification is permanent on the screen, not annoying compared to SMS and real-time – no balance polling reduces load on other bearers

Subscriber secure authentication on external resources remotely through SIM card applet

Solution:
Sicap SIM OTA integrates with 3rd party resource to receive the authentication requests and remotely authorizes subscriber by mobile PIN managed by SIM card applet:

  • A user tries to authenticate on external resource like Web site or VPN
  • External resource sends a query to SIM OTA with user name or id
  • SIM OTA finds a subscriber with this name and sends a secure encrypted SMS with one time generated code to authentication Mobile PIN SIM applet installed on subscriber SIM
  • Mobile-PIN applet shows request to subscriber and asks for PIN
  • On successful PIN entered, SIM applet sends back the secure SMS with the one time generated response
  • SIM OTA decrypts and verifies the response from SMS, then responds to the external resource which finally competes user authentication

  • Highly secured solution – much more secure than one time SMS passwords: secure OTA communication is made based on the industry standard encryption (ex. DES or AES) and one-time generated long binary codes, secure storage of the PIN in the JavaCard secure object on the SIM card, PIN is configured offline by subscriber using SIM menu and is known only to subscriber
